How do you play EuroMillions?

To play EuroMillions, you must select five main numbers from 1 to 50 and two Lucky Star numbers between 1 and 12. You can buy tickets from authorised retailers in any of the nine participating countries, or enter online. View the How to Play EuroMillions page for a step-by-step guide to taking part.

What is the cut-off time for ticket sales?

Ticket sales close at 7:30pm UK time on the night of a draw. Sales remain closed until the draw has taken place, reopening shortly after for the next draw.

Can you enter more than one draw in advance?

You can buy tickets for up to four weeks in advance, entering either the Tuesday draw each week, the Friday draw, or both. It is therefore possible to enter your numbers into eight consecutive draws by playing every Tuesday and Friday for four weeks. You can also sign up to play continuously by direct debit.

Can the same number appear as a main number and a Lucky Star?

Yes, the Lucky Stars are drawn from a separate pool of 12 numbers. You can therefore select the same number(s) as a Lucky Star and a main ball.

How much does it cost to play?

The cost of a single EuroMillions play in the UK is £2.50. This price also enters you automatically into the Millionaire Maker.

Can you play EuroMillions if you don’t live in a participating country?

EuroMillions tickets are available from retailers in Austria, Belgium, France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland, as well as the UK. Yes, you can play the game online from anywhere in the world on theLotter. You don’t have to be in a EuroMillions country to play. All you have to do is log in and you can play online.

Until what time can you play EuroMillions?

You can play the game up until the cutoff time, which is 20:30 CEST. That’s just 15 minutes before the draw takes place. If you’re playing online, remember that you can only play up until a few hours before the draw.

Improving your Odds

There is no practical way to guarantee that you will win the EuroMillions jackpot as you would have to buy every combination of numbers, but there are some ways you can improve your chances of winning.

  • Join a syndicate – In a syndicate, you can enter multiple lines into a draw without increasing the cost of playing. By having a share of multiple lines, rather than just one single line, you improve your chances of winning a prize.
  • Play with random numbers – The odds of a random set of numbers being drawn are just the same as the odds of a more familiar pattern of numbers being drawn. However, prize amounts are partly determined by how many players win, so it is worth trying to choose numbers which have not been picked by anyone else. Many players use significant dates to select numbers – limiting their choice to 31 and under – or just a memorable sequence such as 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50. Therefore, if you want to improve your chances of being the sole winner of a prize, choose random numbers greater than 31.

Tickets Bought in Person

For both the main EuroMillions draw, and the additional HotPicks game, you can claim any winnings by following the procedures outlined below.

£101 — £500 Some retailers can pay out amounts of up to £500 in cash at their discretion, but they are not obliged to do so. If a retailer cannot pay you can either return at an agreed time, go to another retailer or visit a designated National Lottery Post Office. However, if the retailer has already validated your ticket, you will have to return to the same establishment when they have the funds available.
£501 — £50,000 Visit a National Lottery Post Office or a regional payout centre and complete a claim form. Winnings will be paid by cheque, although Post Offices can issue up to £500 in cash out of any prize won.Any winnings of up to £50,000 can also be redeemed by post. Players must write their name and address on the back of their ticket and complete a claim form for prizes over £5,000. The postal address is: The National Lottery, Accounts Department, PO Box 287, Watford, WD18 9TT.
£50,001 and over Contact the National Lottery directly by ringing 0333 234 50 50. Upon completing a claim form and presenting a valid form on identification, prizes can be received at an agreed location.

Are EuroMillions Prizes Taxed?

All EuroMillion lottery prizes are paid out tax-free except for Spain EuroMillions. In Spain, there are two tax bands imposed on lottery winnings:

  • Tax Band 1: Tax-free up to €40,000.

  • Tax Band 2: Any portion of the prize exceeding €40,000 is subject to a tax rate of 20%.

Lucky for players from abroad, citizens of most countries other than Spain are exempt from these tax bands and entitled to a full tax refund in order to prevent double taxation on the winner’s prize. One thing that should be noted is that claiming a tax-refund is the sole responsibility of the winner and must be done through the Spanish tax authorities.

How to Identify a EuroMillions Lottery Scam

  • It is not possible to win a EuroMillions prize, raffle, sweepstake or competition that you have not entered. If you receive a notification informing you that you have won a prize in a game you have never played, it is a scam.
  • To win a EuroMillions prize, you must have purchased a ticket for the correct draw date and your number selection must match the balls required to win the relevant prize.
  • You do not win EuroMillions prizes based on randomly selected mobile phone numbers or email addresses, including for games which you did not enter.
  • EuroMillions will not ask you to pay any type of ‘fee’ to receive your prize.
  • EuroMillions will not ask you to pay the ‘tax’ due on the win in advance of receiving a prize.

Clues to Identify a Scam

All of the points listed below are usually a good indication that the winning notification you have received is a scam:

  • The email has been sent from a free webmail address (for example @hotmail.com, @outlook.com or @yahoo.com) or from an unrelated address that could have been compromised.
  • The letter or email does not address you personally but instead starts with something vague like ‘Dear Winner’. This may not always be the case, however, so don’t assume the message is genuine just because it uses your name.
  • Scam letters are often on poor quality, photocopied letterhead (although some will include a genuine business address in an attempt to provide legitimacy). It is worth noting that not all scam letters are of a low quality; scammers are constantly updating and improving technology so their messages may appear more legitimate.
  • There is often a strict time limit to claim the ‘prize’. This is intended to put the potential victim under pressure and deter them from seeking advice or investigating the matter further.
  • Confidentiality is often demanded as a ‘condition of winning’. Again, this is to deter the recipient from seeking the advice of friends or family who may be more familiar with this type of scam.
  • The communication may contain complicated language and jargon, such as ticket numbers and ‘batch’ references in an attempt to give the document an ‘official’ feel.
  • Poor spelling, grammar and syntax are usually a good indication that the letter or email is a scam.
  • A photocopy of a cheque with your name on it may be contained within the communication to entice you into sending funds, something which real lotteries would never do.
  • Some scams may claim to be from Euro-Millions.com, but please remember that we will never contact you under any circumstances to say you have won a prize. Any prize notifications that supposedly originate from Euro-Millions.com are fraudulent.

Imagine winning a big jackpot—but missing out on your money because you forgot to double-check your numbers. It happens more often than you think.

For example, one MegaMillions lottery ticket worth nearly $300,000 was never claimed. Somewhere out there, there’s someone with no idea that they won, and lost, a huge prize. Don’t let that happen to you.

When you buy a lottery ticket, keep it somewhere where you can find it again easily. Jot down the drawing date and time in your calendar if you’re afraid you might forget it.

Check the numbers against your ticket, and double-check them, just to be sure. Also, make sure that you are looking at the numbers for the correct date.

The Low-High Patterns Based On The Actual EuroMillions Results

Here’s another probability study using the low-high pattern.

We derive the low-high patterns using the following sets:

Low = {1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,…,25}

High = {26,27,28,29,30,…,50}

Again, the results of the study show that EuroMillions follows the dictate of probability.

The table and the graph above reinforces the fact that the EuroMillions game is subordinate to the principle of probability.

  • 3-low-2-high is expected to appear 416 times – it occurred 468 times in the real draw.
  • 4-low-1-high is projected to appear 190 times – it appeared in 216 times in the actual draw.
  • 0-low-5-high is supposed to be drawn 32 times – it was drawn 22 times in the real draw.

As a EuroMillions player, you should pay attention to the composition of your combination and make sure that it follows either the 3-low-2-high or 2-low-3-high patterns.  And never play the rest of the low-high patterns.

Syndicates and Subscriptions

If you joined an online syndicate, or chose your EuroMillions numbers online through theLotter.com, then you will receive any prizes directly into your private account. For larger amounts, you will need to contact their support team to arrange collection of your winnings.

Tax

Only three of the nine participating countries charge taxes on lottery winnings:

  • Spain — Prizes of €40,000 or more are taxed at 20%
  • Switzerland — A 35% tax is owed on any winnings worth over CHF1 million
  • Portugal — Prize amounts over €5,000 are taxed at 20%

Remember the Basics

It seems obvious, but you cannot win EuroMillions without buying a ticket. Once you have bought your tickets, you know that you have a chance of winning that jackpot. You really do have to be in it to win it.

Similarly, you can’t collect a prize if you do not check your ticket. Make sure you use the EuroMillions Ticket Checker soon after the draw takes place to see whether you have matched any numbers and if you are due a prize.

The advantage of playing EuroMillions online is that you are notified of any prizes you win on your tickets, and you can’t lose or damage them because your numbers are digitally connected to you in your player account.

Unfortunately, many scammers try to take advantage of people’s dreams of winning the lottery. Here are a few tips to protect yourself and avoid lottery scams:

  • Only buy tickets from authorized lottery retailers.
  • It’s not legal to sell lottery tickets across national borders. You can usually buy tickets if you are located in the country, but offers to sell international lottery tickets by mail or online are usually illegal.
  • If you didn’t buy a lottery ticket or participate in a second-chance lottery game, you didn’t win.
  • The lottery doesn’t notify you when you win; you are responsible for checking your winning tickets.
  • You’re never required to pay money up-front to receive a winning lottery prize.

Play a EuroMillions System

System entries are often best suited to syndicates, as they involve buying a large number of entries for a draw. You would play more a combination of more numbers than the required five main numbers and two Lucky Stars. For example, you might choose to play six main numbers and three Lucky Stars, which would give you more chances to win should your numbers come up.

You can play system entries in Austria, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Portugal, Switzerland and Spain, but in the UK and Ireland you will need to create your own by writing down all possible combinations of the numbers you choose and entering them on multiple lines to ensure that they are all covered.
